The process will be managed locally by the Making Learning Work team who will support the student in the work place. The employer, and the team representing the students placement, will develop and agree a training programme to meet the students needs. Group work includes one employer working with small groups of pupils (between 6 and 15) and together they explore the world of work in their particular sector and what this would look like in 2030. Employers, where possible do a hands on activity with the children, showing them relevant pieces of equipment. Once the group activities are complete, each group along with the employer, feeds back their findings to the remainder of the year group. At this point parents are invited to attend and join in discussions. A minimum of 4 employers attend each event. These studies have emphasised that pupils aspirations are shaped and often restricted by who they know, their socio-economic background and through gender stereotyping. These factors can influence what subjects they chose, do well in and the careers they consider. Boys will aspire to traditional type male dominated sectors such as engineering, scientists, footballers and the armed forces. Girls however will aspire towards the more traditional female sectors such as vets, teachers and careers in the health and caring profession. By running a series of events that look at a range of sectors and stereotyping, this mindset will slowly change, as pupils are inspired by our visitors. Employers agree with the fact that pupils still think of careers as being female or male, meaning they often rule themselves out of careers that they might be very interested in and very successful at.
